Hi! I’m Coach Will. I grew up in the Bay Area and started playing badminton in 2004 (age 9). Since then, I’ve competed at the highest levels and now coach players of all backgrounds to reach their full potential.

🏆 Career Highlights:
‍
🥇 3x CIF North Coast Section Men’s Singles Champion (2011-2013)
🏆 2013 Mission San Jose HS Men’s Athlete of the Year
🏅 2013 U.S. Junior National Kenneth Davidson Sportsmanship Award
🥇 2015 National Collegiate Men’s Singles Champion
🌏 2017 Team USA Captain – XXIX Summer Universiade, Taipei

I also work professionally as a digital product designer for a national non-profit, and I’m passionate about helping people grow in both skill and character.

My Philosophy & Approach

I strive to get to know every athlete I work with personally to adjust my coaching to fit their needs. In all the instruction I give, I try to instill the values of hard work, enthusiasm, and poise. Skill and technique will come, but these core values apply to on the badminton court and off.

Hard Work

Hard Work

Discipline and hard work is the cornerstone of improving and success as an athlete. I will work with you to develop a mindset that will last beyond the badminton court.

Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm

There is a certain delight and beauty in playing a sport, especially badminton. I want to share the simple joy of just hitting birdies back and forth with a friend that will stay with us indefinitely.

Poise

Poise

Just being yourself and knowing yourself – this is the key to maintaining composure and mental fortitude. We'll work together to build up confidence and humility together, which will drive success.

FAQ

How do I start lessons with you?

Fill out the contact form and Coach Will will get back to you. Whether you'd like a video replay review of your match, or you're interested in private lessons, we will together for the right training program that fits your needs and schedule.

Do you do small group lessons?

Yes! I provide private (1-1), semi-private (2 students), and small group (3-4 students). Please utilize the contact form and indicate your preference on the optional requests. Ideally you'd have your group in mind and we would arrange together. The price point changes depending on the amount of students.

Pricing as of 2025 (subject to change):
‍
Private 1-1: $100/hr
Semi-Private (2 students): $80/hr per student
Small Group (3-4 students): $70/hr per student

Note: Court rental fees not included (typically $40–50/hr) in this pricing.

How do you receive payments?

I take Venmo (@William-Cheung-5) or Zelle.

Do we pay in the beginning or end?

Please send the payment during or after our session by the end of the day. Please let me know beforehand if this is an issue.

Do I have to book the court myself?

Yes, I will send you the details of how to reserve the court – we will either be playing at the Happy Birdie Badminton gym in Burlingame or Fremont. Court rental fees are typically $40–50/hr.

How far in advance must I book?

I work with you to confirm dates and times within 2 weeks of the coaching session.

What if I need to cancel?

Please let me know of a cancellation or resechdule at least 24 hours in advance before our scheduled time. Note that you must also settle the court reservation on your own (usually 48 hours before the scheduled time.)
